AIIB and Uzbekistan sign a $5 billion infrastructure programme
An updated multi-year programme signed on the sidelines of the 11th AIIB Annual Meeting in Doha provides for up to $5 billion in financing for infrastructure projects in 2026–2029; the bank also committed a $1.5 million grant to help modernise the power transmission network.

The Asian Infrastructure Investment Bank (AIIB) and Uzbekistan have signed an updated multi-year programme providing for potential financing of up to $5 billion for infrastructure projects in 2026–2029. The documents were executed on the sidelines of the 11th AIIB Annual Meeting in Doha, Qatar.
What the programme covers
The $5 billion figure is a pipeline of prospective investments, not loans already approved by the bank. The focus areas include cross-border transport, energy and water projects. The two sides also agreed a $1.5 million grant to prepare a project to strengthen Uzbekistan's power transmission system, funding technical studies and preparatory work.
Uzbekistan's role
Uzbekistan is one of AIIB's founding members and the bank's largest partner in the region — about 51% of AIIB's operations in Central Asia are with Uzbekistan. Tashkent is seeking to expand cooperation on cross-border transport, energy and water projects and to bring more private capital into infrastructure.
Energy targets
Part of the pipeline concerns energy. Uzbekistan plans to raise the renewable share to 54% by 2030, add more than 17 GW of new capacity and build over 6,000 kilometres of high-voltage transmission lines.
The updated programme sets the direction of our cooperation through 2029.
