The spokesperson of Iran's Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC), Hossein Mohebbi, said on 30 September that military confrontations are taking place in the Strait of Hormuz every day. He said Iranian forces strike small vessels and prevent them from passing through the strategic waterway. The claim could not be fully verified through independent sources.

What is known

The UK Maritime Trade Operations (UKMTO) reported vessels struck by suspected projectiles, with at least one catching fire before being extinguished. Mohebbi described the situation as daily "military confrontations."

Why it matters

The Strait of Hormuz is a strategic waterway through which about 20% of the world's oil passes (U.S. Energy Information Administration). Any tension in the strait can affect global oil prices.

Negotiations

A Qatar-mediated proposal is under discussion between the US and Iran: Iran would reopen the Strait of Hormuz, and the US would lift its blockade of Iranian ports. However, major disagreements remain over the sequencing of steps.

We have been striking small vessels and preventing their passage for a long time, but America does not respond to this.
