On 8 October 2026 a Russian strike hit two public buses at a stop in the eastern Ukrainian city of Kramatorsk (Donetsk oblast, near the front line).

According to the Donetsk regional prosecutor's office, a guided aerial bomb was used. At least 30 people were killed and about 18 wounded; some bodies could not be identified due to the severity of injuries. Officials said the toll could rise.

The two sides

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy said the strike deliberately targeted ordinary public transport. Russia did not claim responsibility and routinely denies targeting civilians.

In numbers

  • Killed: at least 30 (some sources up to 33)
  • Wounded: ~18
  • Date: 8 October 2026
  • Place: Kramatorsk, Donetsk oblast
  • Weapon: guided aerial bomb (Donetsk prosecutor)

Context

Kramatorsk is one of the main Ukrainian-held cities in Donbas and, being close to the front, is frequently hit by Russian strikes. The attack came a day after a strike on Pryluky (Chernihiv oblast) that killed 22, including five children (a separate event).

Note: this is distinct from the 8 April 2022 strike on Kramatorsk railway station that killed roughly 50–60 people.

This strike will not go unanswered. Russia is trying to destroy all life in Donbas.
