Iran Sends Conditions to End Its War With the US via Qatar; Oil Tops $100

Per Iran's SNSC secretary Mohsen Rezaei, Tehran set three conditions to end the war: a halt to fighting on all fronts, release of frozen funds, and an end to the naval blockade. Oil crossed $100/barrel on 9 September.

In an exclusive Al Jazeera interview (19–20 September 2026), the secretary of Iran's Supreme National Security Council (SNSC), Mohsen Rezaei, said Iran had formally conveyed its conditions to end the war with the US and re-engage in talks to Washington via mediator Qatar (with Pakistan also involved). Iran said it was awaiting a response from US President Donald Trump.

Iran's conditions

The three core conditions Rezaei cited: an end to the war on all fronts (including Lebanon), the release of frozen Iranian funds, and an end to the naval blockade of Iranian ports. Al Jazeera's 20 September piece lists additional demands: halting US strikes on Iranian territory and ending interference in internal affairs.

Our conditions are an end to the war on all fronts, the release of our frozen funds and an end to the naval blockade.

— Mohsen Rezaei, Secretary of Iran's Supreme National Security Council (Al Jazeera, Tehran, 19 September 2026)

How the war began

The “war with the US” refers to the conflict that began on 28 February 2026, when joint US–Israeli strikes hit Iran. A Pakistan-mediated ceasefire and a 60-day memorandum signed on 17 June expired in August, after which strikes and mediation resumed. This is Iran's stated position, not an agreed peace framework; there is no confirmed US acceptance or formal response as of publication.

Oil tops $100

Per NBC News, on 9 September 2026 Brent reached $101.21 a barrel (+3.3%) and WTI $96.05 (+3.2%), the highest since May. Both are up about 70% year-to-date and ~40% since the war began on 28 February. US retail gasoline averaged $4.22 and diesel a record $5.94 a gallon.

The Hormuz factor

Roughly a fifth of world oil supply normally flows through the Strait of Hormuz, now disrupted. Analysts warn Brent could reach $120–150 if the standoff continues. For Uzbekistan and Central Asia, higher world oil prices can feed into fuel and food costs.

Balance

The conditions come from one senior Iranian official (Rezaei) in one interview, echoed by a Reuters/BOE wire. US war aims, per sources, focused on curbing Iran's nuclear, missile and military capabilities. Both positions are presented neutrally; casualty figures are approximate (“thousands”).
