Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov said on 10 October 2026 that Russian President Vladimir Putin — in coordination with Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian — had conveyed Iran's views on resolving the conflict with the US to US President Donald Trump. This took place during a phone call held on 9 October.

Peskov did not disclose the substance of Iran's position, nor how Trump responded. The Russian side (TASS, citing presidential aide Yuri Ushakov) said Trump acknowledged Russia's uranium offer and 'welcomed' Moscow's involvement — a claim attributed only to the Russian side and not independently confirmed.

The state of the conflict

The US-Iran conflict began on 28 February 2026 with US and Israeli strikes on Iran (around 900 strikes in 12 hours, per the US Congressional Research Service). A temporary ceasefire followed in April, and a Memorandum of Understanding to end the conflict was signed in June.

The MoU collapsed within weeks and formally expired in August. After Iranian attacks on shipping in the Strait of Hormuz, the US resumed military operations. Indirect talks at the UN General Assembly in September produced no breakthrough; as of 10 October, diplomacy is described as deadlocked.

Iran's stated claim

Iranian state media (Press TV) reported that Tehran had put forward a 'seven-day process' to normalize Strait of Hormuz operations, conditional on the US halting military action, lifting the blockade and releasing frozen Iranian assets. This is presented as Iran's own statement and is not independently confirmed. The term 'war' is widely used, but there is no formal declaration of war — this is a conflict/hostilities.
