Kazakhstan's President Kassym-Jomart Tokayev has endorsed the voluntary artificial intelligence accord recently signed in Washington by US President Donald Trump and leaders of major technology companies, and proposed taking it global as a "Washington Model." He said it could become the basis for an international treaty under the auspices of the United Nations.

Where it was said

The proposal was made on 2 October 2026 at the third meeting of Kazakhstan's Artificial Intelligence Development Council, chaired by Tokayev at the Akorda Presidential Palace in Astana. He instructed the Council to prepare concrete proposals for a Kazakhstan-led international AI-governance initiative and to present them at the G20 Summit in Miami in December 2026.

What the accord is

The Washington accord is a voluntary 2026 agreement under which technology companies pledge to police advanced AI through four layers: internal controls, dedicated monitoring, independent external assessments and board-level oversight.
