Overnight on 6–7 October, Russia launched a mass missile-and-drone attack on Ukraine covering Kyiv and about 12 regions. The attack coincided with Vladimir Putin's 74th birthday. The deadliest strike was recorded in Pryluky, Chernihiv Oblast, where a cruise missile hit a five-storey apartment block and destroyed part of it.
Casualties and scale
At least 19 people, including four children, were killed across Ukraine; the toll rose through the day as rescue work continued. According to the Ukrainian Air Force, Russia launched about 70 missiles and 130 attack drones; of these, 39 of 48 cruise missiles and 117 of 130 drones were downed or suppressed. The strikes forced emergency power cuts in five regions.
Russia's position
Russia's Ministry of Defence said the "massive strike" targeted military-industrial facilities in Kyiv and other regions — including sites where the company Fire Point makes and stores its "Flamingo" cruise missiles and long-range drones — as well as energy infrastructure. Russia did not acknowledge targeting residential buildings.
A "birthday gift"
Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky called the strike a "gift" for Putin's birthday: "Today, as a birthday 'gift' to Putin, the Russian army destroyed a residential building in Pryluky." The attack came amid a wider campaign against Ukraine's energy grid ahead of winter.
