On 12 October, President Shavkat Mirziyoyev held an open dialogue with entrepreneurs and investors in New Tashkent. At the meeting it was announced that each region and each district of Tashkent will receive 100 hectares of land from the new city.

How the land is divided

Each of the country's 13 regions and every district of Tashkent will be given 100 hectares in New Tashkent. Local entrepreneurs can take part in projects there; investments made in these areas will count toward the performance indicators of the respective region or district.

Each regional governor (khokim) must personally present and have approved by the head of state a conceptual project and architectural design for their assigned 100-hectare area. Construction begins only after this step.

Incentives for business

In the dialogue with investors and entrepreneurs, the president announced a sharp cut in infrastructure fees for businesses and service-sector operators in New Tashkent. The aim is to speed up the flow of investment into the megaproject and stimulate private-sector activity.

What opened that day

The same day, seven facilities worth a combined $1 bln were put into operation in New Tashkent: the first phase of the Sharq Bahori residential complex, Substation No. 1, a trigeneration plant, the Chamber of Commerce and Industry building, Sohil Bogi Park, a school for 2,000 students, and road and infrastructure facilities. In addition, construction began on ten major projects worth a combined $2.5 bln.

The head of state said the projects would help turn New Tashkent into a centre of business, tourism and culture, and thanked the builders, engineers, designers and foreign partners involved in the city's construction.

Why it matters

New Tashkent is a large urban-development megaproject rising next to the capital. By distributing land to all regions, the government is trying to give the project a nationwide character and draw regional entrepreneurship into construction in the capital.
