The Saudi-led coalition said on November 5, 2026 that it had intercepted and destroyed a ballistic missile fired by Yemen's Houthis toward the Medina region. The statement came after Saudi civil defence issued a warning for the area. Because Medina is one of Islam's two holiest cities, the attack drew wide attention.

What happened

According to the coalition, a single ballistic missile launched by the Houthis was directed toward the Medina region and was shot down by air-defence systems. Several outlets reported that a drone was recorded alongside the missile. No information was given on casualties, destruction or damage from falling debris; after the initial warning, authorities announced the danger had passed.

Why Medina is sacred

Medina, together with Mecca, is one of the two holiest cities in Islam. It is home to the Mosque of the Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him), Al-Masjid an-Nabawi. For that reason any attack on or near the city carries particular symbolic and religious weight for Muslims. The warning zone was declared around the strategic Red Sea oil port of Yanbu and the Sharurah governorate.

The Yemen war context

Through 2026 the conflict in Yemen escalated again: an earlier truce collapsed, the Houthis resumed attacks on Saudi Arabia, and international outlets reported that the port of Yanbu and oil facilities had been targeted several times. Saudi Arabia in turn carried out renewed strikes on Houthi-held areas. Against this backdrop, the missile fired toward Medina was read as a sign that the conflict is now threatening holy cities as well.

The Houthi position

The Houthi movement did not immediately claim responsibility for this specific attack. The movement has previously rejected deliberately targeting the holy cities of Mecca and Medina, insisting its strikes are aimed only at oil facilities and military targets. California Uzbek reports the event strictly within verified facts and cites the statements of all sides.
